The boys swam with their pool friends until it was time for the party to begin. Most of the usual pool people leave between 3 and 4 o'clock. Around 3:30, the birthday boy's family arrived and the remainder of the guests arrived around 4. The boy's mom told the guests that they could swim until the pizza was delivered.
SJ was so excited when the pizza arrived. He joined all the other guests at the picnic tables to have their dinner. I was sitting in my chair watching SJ interact with all the party guests. He was smiling and chatting away with his friends. This was definitely a moment that he wasn't a kid with PDD. He was just another 5th grader spending time with his peers. I love these moments!
After the kids were done with pizza, they had more swim time. The birthday boy didn't want anyone to sing to him, so his mom skipped that traditional party event. She did, however, make lots and lots of cupcakes. SJ had ran over to get a cupcake, but they were vanilla frosted with chocolate or chocolate frosted with vanilla. Sounds good, right? Not to SJ. He doesn’t like chocolate! SJ was a little disappointed, but he went back into the pool instead.
At the end of the party, the mom passed out the gift bags and the boys thanked the birthday boy for inviting them. They were very excited to each get a water ball to play with on other pool days. What a great gift to put in the treat bags.
When we got home, SJ told my husband all about the birthday party. As I listened to him chat away to my husband, I was reminded once again how lucky we are in SJ's progress. I am hopeful that he will keep progressing this nicely and one day the PDD will be completely invisible!
