summer speech part 6

SJ had his weekly speech session on Thursday.  After his session was over, his therapist had her little update chat with me.  She said he was VERY talkative this week.  He told her all about our upcoming trip to the lake.  He also told her about how sad he was that he wasn't able to go to the pool this week.

After he was done talking her ear off, they started to work.  She didn't continue with the swimming story.  Instead, she read him a non-fiction story about Kennywood.  (For those of you who don’t know what Kennywood is, it is our local amusement park.)  After she read him the key points, she had him begin to develop a visual diagram.  With Kennywood being the main idea (or center circle as SJ likes to call it), she had him list off broad details of the park.

He listed rides, food and games.  When she sees him the next time, she is going to have him elaborate on each of the broad details.  This will expand his visual diagram.  Once they are done with the visual diagram, she is going to have him write a story using the visual aide.

I thought this is a great way to teach SJ to be mindful of the main idea and details.  I am hoping he carries this strategy over to the new school year.
